WESTERN BUREAU:The Railway Gardens Basic School, located in the heart of the city of Montego Bay, was presented with approximately $70,000 worth of school supplies on Tuesday, courtesy of the Le Antonio Foundation.

Among the items of gifts donated to the students were notebooks, pencils, erasers and school shoes. Teachers received a host of teaching materials such as markers, cartridge paper, crayons, highlighters, pens, cardboard, chalk and office glue.

Principal of the school, Laura Clarke, said the gifts came in just at the right time to assist the students, many of whom were also in need of the items received.

“We are very happy,” Clarke said. “Most of the students were in need of additional learning materials, and this donation by Le Antonio has greatly assisted us teachers in our efforts to teach the students. We are very optimistic that our students’ learning will be significantly enhanced from here on.”

Local Montego Bay building contractor and businessman, Antonio McKoy, is the founder and president of the charity which opened its doors last December. He told Western Focus that he was inspired to start the foundation as he wanted to make a difference in the lives of others.

“I see a need every day. There are so many persons who require a helping hand and I want to do something tangible to benefit the community in the long term. I believe that if we help out the youth of today, then we will build a better future for our country and our society,” he said.

Among the Le Antonio Foundation’s objectives is to provide school supplies where needed, to schools in St James. In addition to making donations to inner city schools, Le Antonio’s Foundation also operates a homework centre and a mentorship programme at its headquarters, located at 1 Barnett Lane, Montego Bay.

The centre is staffed by volunteer teachers and other professionals based in Montego Bay and is open to youngsters between the ages of six and 16. The mentorship programme is offered every Tuesday, starting at 3 p.m., and goes up until 5:30 p.m.
